The resource room teacher functions as a teacher and tutor to the students in their room and in the general education setting. These students may need direct instruction in basic skills or they may need instructional support to complete grade-level assignments given in their other classrooms. Resource room teachers devise their own lessons to provide instruction in basic skills for those students who need remediation.
Collaboration
Resource room teachers collaborate with other teachers who also instruct the students who attend the resource room. The general education teacher shares their lesson plans and give input about the student's strengths/weaknesses within the classroom. The resource room teacher should also inform the teacher of their plans for student remediation. By working together, all involved teachers can avoid duplicating unsuccessful efforts and gear instruction in a consistent manner to best help the student.
Assessments
Resource room teachers asses their students regularly to determine what additional instruction is needed. Also, resource room teachers review cumulative records, teacher grade books and other testing information on a regular basis.
Paperwork
Resource room teachers are responsible for writing and reviewing individualized education plans (IEPs). These plans are written with input from the general education teachers, parents, and other school personnel. When meetings are required, the resource room teacher is responsible for scheduling and conducting the IEP meeting. Resource room teachers may also be asked to help write and implement behavior intervention plans for those students with behavioral problems.
We also have Linda Kommer helping in our room. She works with the all our kids throughout the day. We are lucky to have her!
